In the style of Gordon Cullen's 1961 'Serial Vision' a series of photographs were taken on approach to the site.

Folie Exemplar
After a Brief team meeting, in which the site was analysed along the notion of a 'Folie' and this particular project, it was decided that our theme would be to allow the user to use devises to look closer at particular areas they might have not previously or provide context for which the area they are standing in. We then preceded to research exemplars of similar installations that might help our design process.

This installation by MAP, was to provide a context when viewing Hong Kong from afar. This was especially so during fog and haze when the user does not know were to look to see a the skyline. This binocular shaped piece keeps the viewing elements fixed to a point at two different levels of zoom. This is an eye catching way to draw in the user and allow them to gather information about their context.

This installation in several Sydney CBD lane ways, was to allow users to use the devices to view certain areas. The 'periscopes' actually containing a screen, displays an image of an area in Sydney's western suburbs. The concept was 'looking over the over-looked', providing a city inhabitant a view of little seen or ignored suburbs that are in need.

Folie Design: Abstraction, Metaphor + Scale
We have been given the task to design a Folie for the Howard Smith Wharves adjacent to Brisbane CBD.
A folie is something that becomes an 'Activator of Space' and a place that people pass through, learn something and continue on with this new knowledge.

Parc de la Villette, Bernard Tschumi, 1987

The regeneration of an empty site in Paris, by Bernard Tschumi, uses a number of Folie spaces to engage with the user. The park is unusual as it was one the first to design around the 'cultural' elements rather than 'natural'.
K2 Red Telephone Box, Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, 1926

The K2 Telephone Box is an example of a simple, somewhat Folie that has become an icon for the landscape it was designed for. They provide the ability to identify your location as they can only be associated with one country.
Our Folie must be one single entity, that relates to its surrounds, provides a learning space for at least two people and must fit within a 5 metre cube.
The design must hod merit within:
Function (how is it occupied? how is it used differently? How can it influence beyond its own Proximity?)
Tectonic (how is it anchored? assembled? whats is its significant structural+ material feature?)
Experience (view within? how does it sit within its context? how is a journey experienced?)
